The world-renowned music maestro, AR Rahman, made waves at the Times Now Summit 2024, not just with his insights into his illustrious career but with his visionary plans for India’s entertainment landscape. Amid discussions on his upcoming musical contributions to the eagerly awaited film Maidaan, Rahman revealed his ambitious project to bring a slice of Broadway to Chennai, showcasing his determination to transcend the boundaries of cinema.

Rahman, who is celebrated globally for his eclectic compositions, emphasized his broader vision for the arts beyond the confines of movie screens. His initiative to establish a Broadway-style theatre in Chennai is a testament to his desire to enrich India’s cultural fabric with diverse artistic expressions. Collaborating with like-minded friends, Rahman is steering towards making this dream a reality, despite the daunting challenges of finance and logistics that loom ahead.

At the Summit, Rahman shared, “My dream is actually to start an arts collective in Chennai, to build a place where we can do stuff like Broadway.” This statement not only reflects his global perspective but also his commitment to nurturing talent and offering new platforms for artistic endeavors in India.

The composer also hinted at a musical project in London, adding another layer to his global artistic engagements, although details remain under wraps for now.

In addition to his groundbreaking announcement, Rahman also launched the anthem ‘Team India Hain Hum’ from Maidaan, a film that narrates a true story with Ajay Devgn in the lead, accompanied by a talented cast including Priyamani and Gajraj Rao. Directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, Maidaan faced numerous setbacks, including the dismantling of its set due to the COVID-19 lockdown and damage from Cyclone Tauktae. Despite these challenges, the film, scored by the Oscar-winning Rahman, is all set for its theatrical release in April 2024, much to the anticipation of fans.

Rahman’s journey from cinematic music to conceptualizing a Broadway in Chennai illustrates his multifaceted talent and visionary approach to the arts.
